AMBUSHED IN THE NIGHT

Ambushed in the Night a short story by Austin Mitchell Laddie Wright was my friend. We came from the Keswick Mountains. We attended the same high school. At thirty three, I was only a few months older than him. Laddie was a mechanic while I had found work as a security guard. I was an armed security guard. People said of me that I was blood thirsty. As a rule, we never tell about the number of shootings we’ve been involved in. Jamaica is a violent place and once you’re carrying a gun you’re likely to be challenged by some hoodlum wanting to take away your gun. Maybe he wants to rob the place you’re guarding so he figures that if he shoots you there’s nobody to stop him from robbing the place. Well, quite a few of them have come up against me and I’m still alive. I’ve been in some sticky situations before, saw my colleagues killed or gravely wounded and I’ve had to shoot my way out of it. I remembered calling for backup, but none came. Anyway the saddest part of it all was about

Undercover Sodier-Chapter One

Chapter One-Undercover Soldier by Austin Mitchell Bendoo kept one eye on the road while thinking about the summons he had received from his boss, Neil McDonald, the head of Special Branch. It wasn’t every day that you received such a call so it had to be something important. He followed the road which hugged the side of a mountain. A vehicle was parked ahead of him and a man was pulling a woman towards the car. He passed the vehicle, looked in his rear view mirror, then decided to stop. Knowing how isolated this place was, he patted the gun in his waist reassuringly, before getting out of the vehicle. “What’s going on here?” “Nothing, mind your own business.” “I didn’t ask you any questions, Mister. Is this man bothering you, Miss?” “Didn’t you hear what I said, guy? You must be deaf or something.” The man rushed in,swinging a fist at him. Bendoo blocked the blow and hit him on his jaw. He punched him under the chin and he staggered and fell. The woman was screaming and

THE ROBBER GAMBLERS

The Robber Gamblers(a short story) by Austin Mitchell Calton and Linton were playing checkers. Calton was winning the games. He knew that he was better at any board game than Linton. In fact he had won many local checkers tournaments before. “How much is your bike worth, Linton?” Calton asked. Linton smirked. “You will never own a bike like the one I have, guy," he boasted. Calton laughed, he knew he was close to cleaning out Linton. They set up their pieces on the board again. They played for another fifteen minutes. Linton threw down his last thousand dollars and they began playing again. Calton won the game again. He stretched his hands to pick up the money when suddenly Linton pulled a knife on him. “Give me all the money you have,” Linton ordered and took away Calton’s knife. He then dug his hands into the man’s pocket and took out his wallet. “Empty out your other pockets,” Linton ordered.

Run Freddi, Run- a short story by Austin Mitchell

Run Freddie, Run a short story by Austin Mitchell We heard that Boyd was sitting on a wall near the school gate and drinking beer. What had really happened was that during morning recess Freddie Reid had thrown a stone hitting his brother, Lewis, causing a huge cut in his forehead and he had to be rushed to the nearby clinic. He had gotten flogged for it, but Lewis’ sisters at the Goffe Spring’s All Age School had reported it to his older brothers. By lunch time rumors began circulating about one of his brothers, a gunman named Delly, issuing threats to Freddie. Lewis had been mocking Freddie about the shape of his head. We all thought that he would make a run for it at lunch time as he lived in Nelson about a mile and a half from school. He couldn’t wait until school was over as threats were being sent to him. I was in Jackson Chung’s shop which is next door to school when I heard Lewis’ cousin, Gully and another man, Bam, talking. “That youth is wicked. He nearly blinded Lewis. Al

THE OLYMPICS

I thought Jamaica did well at the Olympics. We won a total of 4 gold medals, 1 silver and 4 bronze medald. My biggest disappointment was the men's 4x100 relays. Hope they will do better at the World Championships next year. But I think we've put ourselves on the map once again. We've shown the world that we little, but we tallawah.

THE WEEDMEN(THE MARIJUANA SMOKERS) A SHORT STORY BY AUSTIN MITCHELL

The Weedmen (The Marijuana Smokers) by Austin Mitchell Salman took another blow off the chillum pipe. Bully was smoking a long stick of weed. Delly and Mendy were the other men in the group of marijuana farmers. Both had marijuana cigarettes. They were way up in the woods of Lobban’s Ridge, about three miles north of Linstead. All four men had fields nearby where they grew legal crops such as cucumbers, callaloo, pak-choi among others. These they sold to higglers or retailed them in nearby districts. Salman was of medium height and was thirty nine years of age. Delly and Mendy were both tall men. Delly was thirty with Mendy being a year older. “Weed here is good weed,” Salman said, taking another blow off the chillum pipe. They saw Mello approaching them. Mello was about the same height as Mendy and was the same age as Delly. “What’s going on, Mello?” Mendy greeted him. Mello removed the marijuana made cigarette from his lips. “Some men went into my field last night. They re

THE GUN TOTING SHOPKEEPER A SHORT STORY BY AUSTIN MITCHELL

The Gun Toting Shopkeeper by Austin Mitchell Wes Freeman kept shop in the Keswick mountains. His bar was adjoining the shop. David Daniels had a bakery, grocery shop and bar a hundred meters down the road. All of us knew just how dangerous Wes was. He was in his middle fifties and was living with a woman twenty years younger than him. She had two children for him, a boy and a girl. Annette helped him run both the bar and the shop. We knew that Wes was more comfortable with her running the shop rather than the bar because of the number of men coming to the bar to drink and to chat her up. Why I said that he was a dangerous man was that he had shot and injured a number of men, four of whom died. One of these men was Albert Binger. Wes caught him breaking into his shop one early morning. He had challenged him. Albert responded by attacking him with a crowbar, Wes fired several shots, three of which reportedly caught Binger. He died on the way to hospital. His three sons swore to get

THE MONEY FOUND IN THE CANVASS BAG-Chapter One

THE MONEY FOUND IN THE CANVASS BAG BY AUSTIN MITCHELL Chapter One Clement and Norris were in the woods of Lobbans Ridge, cutting yam sticks when they saw two men digging away. Three other men stood around. Clement gestured to Norris to keep quiet as the latter was about to fall a tree. He crept forward to get a closer look at what they were doing. It was around two o’clock in the afternoon. They were in the district of Spring Vale, a large district five miles north of Linstead. The two men watched as the relief diggers finished digging the hole. They could see that it was a large hole, enough to hold a body. The five men left and went and opened their car trunk and took out a large canvas covered object. The men had little trouble carrying it to the hole. They dumped the bag into the hole, then heaped dirt on it. An hour after the men left, the two men were still arguing as to what to do. Clement believed that they should report what they saw, to the police. Norris was of the op

Sleeping Love-First Chapter

Sleeping Love by Austin Mitchell Chapter One When twenty three-year-old Konya Evans arrived at the offices of Standard Management Services in Cross Roads, the first man she met was Denver Tracey. She knew at once that he had affected her in some way. “Hi, I’m Konya Evans,” she introduced herself to the tall man. She judged his height to be about six feet, and he was about twenty six years of age. She hoped that he wasn’t married. She had to catch herself, such thoughts. He was dark in complexion, but very handsome, she had to admit. He had a low haircut and was clean shaven. It was early, about eight o’clock in the morning and the building seemed empty. “I’m here as a senior accounting clerk and relief telephone operator.” “I’m Denver Tracey and you’re the new employee, Peter told me about.” She nodded. She had done the interview for this job from the middle of January and here she was just landing it in February. “I’m going to get some breakfast at the canteen, won’t you come
