PICTURE ON THE WALL

I was attending Keswick Mountain High School when they assassinated Martin Luther King. We had some Peace Corps volunteers at the school. They were from various countries but they were Caucasian people. When were came to school that morning caricatures of all the Peace Corps volunteers were panted on the walls of the building facing where we normally had our morning assembly. None of them showed up for assembly. I don't know if they were scared or what. All of us were in shock that somebody could do such a brazen act. Suspicion fell on a dreadlocks who lived near the school. I don't think the police were called in and the matter had a peaceful ending.

COUNTRY BUSES

Whatever happened to the old country buses? They used to be our only means of transportation in the old days. One bus ran from Glengoffe to Kingston. It would leave Big Roads in the mornings at about 5.00am. The bus was called Above Rocks Special. It was owned by a man named Kervin. Cyrill Malabre and a man called Mr Will were some of the loaders. The bus would go to Harkers Hall then turn back and head for Kingston. Incidentally, there was a morning bus traveling from Kingston and coming through Above Rocks. It was one of the Blue Mist buses. It went as far as Kellits in Clarendon in the mornings. Students from St. Mary's College usually took it to school in the mornings. Another Blue Mist bus also came up from Kinsgton in the morning, traveling the Stony Hill, Cassava River route. It went through Linstead to Kellits. These routes were often dangerous and the buses had to negotiate break aways and very narrow roads. There were often accidents and people were killed when a bus fell

Midtown Lovers

Two women are fighting to see who will get lover boy, Grant Harper. This story is included in my newest collection of short stories' I'm back from the Hills Now'. It will be available on Amazon and payhip. It's about twenty two pages long. It's a very intriguing story as these two young girls battle it out to see who will Gran't love. Even then the battle isn't over because, it's who can keep that love burning. A very interesting story.

IDENTICAL TWINS?

No, there weren't identical twins. Weston Brown and Freddie Brown were brothers. They used to work as Weston Brown. I first met Weston at a government department, Downtown, Kingston in the late seventies. Both of us were temporary office clerks. Surprisingly, I have never seen Weston again. Two jobs and maybe about five years later I encountered a man calling himself, Weston Brown. He resembled the first Weston and based on what I had heard was from the same area. We were both clerks at Jackson Wright insurance brokerage firm. People who knew the first Weston said that the second Weston was working in his brother's name. The second Weston told me that the first Weston's real name was Freddie. He lent him his certificates to look a job as he didn't have any qualifications. But senior staff at Jackson Wright's agency complained bitterly about Weston's poor performance. Jackson was forced to fire him. I left the firm a year later having gotten a better job offer. O

ANOTHER CRIME FIGHTING MEASURE?

I penned this letter to a newspaper but never spent it. The Editor Sir, It might not be a crime fighting measure but I believe it's time where just like in the United States the license plates of all vehicles should be identified by the parish in which the owner lives or operates the vehicle. If such a system were introduced into Jamaica I don't think most of those gangsters could move so easily between parishes as most of them are mobile.Readers remember my books on Amazon.com, payhip.com and lulu. HABITS DIE HARD

A man told me that he lost about half a million dollars gambling jackpot machine(one armed bandit).I used to play it and maybe I've lost that amount of money. I now detest gambling. You are always losing when you gamble. Some persons gamble and win huge amounts of money and are now not happy. I used to think that this man was winning thousands of dollars at jackpot only to realize that he was losing his shirt.

THE PRETENTIOUS STUDENT

Me and Norris Reid used to attend the same high school. I was two years ahead of him. About five years after I left school I met him in Half Way Tree. He had some voluminous law books. We got to talking and he started telling me about his professors at the university. Frankly he left me wide-eyed as I didn't know that he was doing law. I know that you had to get some pretty good grades to get into the law faculty. I am not one to put down others. A month later I saw one of Norris' classmates. I asked if he knew that Norris was studying law at the University. He expressed surprise. Some months later I saw Norris again. He accused me of spreading rumors about him. I didn't know what to make of the whole thing. Why was he walking around with law books and talking about professors as if he was in daily contact with them? I haven't heard that he was crazy or anything like that but I still found it very strange. Please visit the Austin G Mitchell pages at Amazon to have a lo

Easter time and Bun and Cheese

Living in rural Jamaica in the sixties we didn't have the comfort of walking into a supermarket, taking the goods we are going to buy and either put them in a trolley or a basket before we head for the cashier. Instead we would head for the corner shop and order our groceries. At Easter time we would order our buns from a woman called Miss Lou Jim. She was a spinster who lived alone and who incidentally was my god mother. I can't remember where the cheese came from or how many buns there were or the price of those buns.

My First Time in Kingston

It was in the 1960's that I went to Kingston to spend a week with relatives. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. We didn't have television in rural Jamaica at this time.I got to watch black and white television. I still remembered on of the shows that intrigued me and it was about Rob Roy Mc Gregor. I saw baseball being played at the Machado Sports club on South Camp Road. There was also a branch of a famous supermarket nearby. I also spent a night on Lyndhurst Road. Kingston has changed a whole lot from those days.

Jamaica's East Kingston

Today I heard an historian talking about all the great people who had come out of East Kingston. They included famous athletes, footballers, cricketers, musicians, educators, doctors. I am encouraging some historian to write a book about not only East Kingston but other areas in Kingston that has produced great people. Indeed I want to encourage Jamaicans to write books about their particular neck of the woods. We cannot let other people write our history for us.I know that we an oral society but but as I have said it is dangerous to let other people write your history.
