Manage Your Money

Managing Your Money I wrote a play several years ago about a man who returned to Jamaica with his lottery winnings. He blew that money in under five years. I recently read in the newspapers about a man who came into what most persons would call a fortune and like the man I wrote about has almost blown it. I won't go into how this man said his money went. What I will simply say that is that I know that a lot of persons are calling him foolish and vowing that could never happen to them. It can happen to anyone coming into an unexpected fortune or fame. How often we've heard about famous sportsmen and their demise even after earning fame and fortune. I am no money management expert. My advice to persons coming into any large amount of money is to seek an advisor. All the banks and investment houses have such persons ready to sit down with the individual and discuss their options.

The Big Drop-a short story by Austin Mitchell

The Big Drop by Austin Mitchell                 Racka   lay on his back on the naked concrete of his veranda. He had begged   Willie Brown’s   son, Westin, to buy some rope for him. Miss Birdie’s shop was a quarter of a mile away and it was about an hour ago that he had given the boy the money. He had a sneaky feeling that the boy had eaten the money and would probably take a short cut to avoid passing his yard when he was returning from the shop.   He would catch him one of these days and make him return the money or tell his father about what had happened. But then, Racka wondered if he would be around to collect his money from Westin.             He thought about other ways of doing it. He remembered what Stanford Ranger had done five years ago. He, along with several persons had passed the man by the side of the road and had even told him ‘Good morning.’ Come to think of it, he couldn’t remember if Stanford had replied to his greetings. He was as surprised as most

Surprise Love-a short story by Austin Mitchell

Surprise Love by Austin Mitchell           There couldn’t be two people more different than Chloe Bryan and Dennis Reid.   It wasn’t their height or their complexion or their body type. Truth to be told he was tall and she was tall and both were thin. They were both working for Obrien and Charley, Public Accountants.             “Dennis Reid, why are you looking at me like that?” Chloe asked.             “How am I looking at you, Chloe?”             “As if you’re angry with me because I told you to stop drinking and smoking.”             Both had just finished having lunch and were sitting outside under a large tree in front of the company’s offices.             Marjorie Reece and Jack Beacon came and sat beside them.             “I’ve never seen you two and you’re not quarrelling,” Marjorie remarked.             “They must be in love,” Jack put in.             “Dennis doesn’t need a girlfriend. He takes out his sorrows in liquor and cigarettes. I doubt

Eastern Jamaican athletes deserve much more.

The 2016 Jamaica boy's and girl's athletic championship is in its final day, today, Saturday March 19,2016. Edwin Allen is leading the girl's section while Jamaica College is leading the boy's section. While it is predicted that Edwin Allen will run out easy winners of their section, Jamaica College is expected to be overtaken by Calabar and Kingston College. The latter two schools will then battle it out for championship honors. But saying that, maybe J.C has a surprise up it's sleeves and could run away with the championship. I notice quite a few winners from the eastern end of the island. I wonder if we would not have had more had we had a chance to hold Eastern Champs. I notice that this is the only part of the island without a development meet on our athletics calendar. The area has produce too many starts and deserve better treatment. Some persons are saying that schools from the area need to finish higher in the championship. I believe that every child deserv

A Library in Half Way Tree

A Library in Half Way Tree? I think it is high time that we have a library in Half Way Tree. Frankly I think the library on Tom Redcam Drive is only serving the needs of the immediate community. It closes at 6:00 pm on weekdays and 5:00 on Saturdays. Students living above Half Way Tree must find it difficult to access this library. Some philanthropist might decide to build a private library and charge a fee to use it. Sometimes one is in Half Way Tree and feel like using a library and then have to go to Cross Roads. The area looks so deserted sometimes although army camp is next door. I notice also a lot of foreigners passing through Half Way Tree, surely a library would add to the cultural identity of the area.  Mandela Park looks so uninviting and the third floor of the transportation center is always closed. I believe that as Half Way Tree could be made far more attractive for both locals and visitors by upgrading the
