Glengoffe Days 2

I wrote a collection of poems called Glengoffe Days. I recently wrote an article on the jippi jappa industry. Agriculture played a big part in Glengoffe. We had bissy (kola nut), cocoa and to a lesser extent coffee. Other crops were bananas, yams, plantains. Most farmers abandoned the sugar cane industry in the seventies. What saved most of the farmers were the higglers who took their produce to sell in various markets. As I have said before there were no idlers or unemployed persons in Glengoffe in those days.

Environmental Concerns One Destroying our Forests I am no environmentalist, at least I’ve never gotten any training in any of the relevant disciplines. Nevertheless, I have my concerns. Years ago, maybe it could be the middle sixties I went to this forest in my village. I estimated it to be about fifteen to twenty acres in size. We dug some wild yams, ginger and things that can be put on cuts. I never went back there. A couple of years ago when I asked about the forest, I was told that it had been cut down and replaced with the cultivation of cash crops. I was appalled. How could something like this happen? I don’t know who owns the land on which it was situated. My question is, do the relevant government agencies do a mapping of our forests in order to preserve them?

THE WEEDMEN(THE MARIJUANA SMOKERS) A SHORT STORY BY AUSTIN MITCHELL

The Weedmen (The Marijuana Smokers) by Austin Mitchell Salman took another blow off the chillum pipe. Bully was smoking a long stick of weed. Delly and Mendy were the other men in the group of marijuana farmers. Both had marijuana cigarettes. They were way up in the woods of Lobban’s Ridge, about three miles north of Linstead. All four men had fields nearby where they grew legal crops such as cucumbers, callaloo, pak-choi among others. These they sold to higglers or retailed them in nearby districts. Salman was of medium height and was thirty nine years of age. Delly and Mendy were both tall men. Delly was thirty with Mendy being a year older. “Weed here is good weed,” Salman said, taking another blow off the chillum pipe. They saw Mello approaching them.
