SHOOL FIGHTS

School Fights a short story by Austin Mitchell My old friend Elroy Reddy told me that two weeks into his high school life at Mc Cauley High in Nothern St Catherine, Cal Evans came to fight him. He was standing up in class. School was over for the day and he was getting ready to go home. Most students had already left. He was there when he felt a blow to his left side. He spun around and there was Cal. "So you want to take away my girl?" Cal fired a fist at him again and he ducked. The two of them then began to trade punches. Elroy said that he had fought in primary school, but Cal's punches were heavy. He grunted at the force of the boy's punches. Finally, just as he was about to finish off Cal, some bigger boys pulled them apart. Elroy said that he didn't understand why Cal came to fight him. He hardly knew the girl he was accusing him of taking away from him. He didn’t even know Cal as he had just met him for the first time, at the beginning of the school term. Some boys who knew of Cal's volatile temper tried to get them to fight again but it never materialized. Elroy believed that the real reason was that Cal having felt the power of his punches didn't want to tangle with him again. There was one time when Elroy tried to arrange a fight between Cal and a fellow student, Brad Davis. Brad had a fierce temper and was easily provoked. Both men liked a girl named Dania Wright. One evening, Elroy saw Brad walking home with Dania. He and other boys started teasing Cal that Brad was taking away his girl. Cal got angry and confronted Brad. Both men ran to pick huge rockstones to throw at each other. Elroy and the other boys had to get between them to prevent them causing serious harm to each other. The End.
