Publishing Contract

I just received an email offering me a book contract. I had sent a copy of one of my manuscripts in response to an advertisement for such material. I immediately Googled the publisher and found out that they were Vanity Publishers. They normally charged a fee to publish your book. I went back and read the publishing agreement and sure enough they were charging a fee to publish my book. I was told that if any material written by you is worth anything then you shouldn't have to pay to publish it.

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. Jamaica Creative Writer's Conference

How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
