Going to School at St. Mary's College

We normally took Mr. Thames milk truck to school in the mornings. If it was down we had to walk through Ashley district and then through Cudjoe's Hut until we hit the mail road and then we'd walk the rest to school. It was approximately a three mile journey through Ashley and Cudjoe's Hut. From the end of Cudjoe's Hut to school was about a half a mile. On the way home from school we would walk around Zion Hill if there were heavy rains because we had to cross two rivers in Cudjoe's Hut.

BUBBLE'S BABY-An Excerpt

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. I don’t have any children yet. She’s gone for an interview in Kingston so she begged me to keep him for her.” I used to teach both Bubbles and Leta at Mc Cauley High School in Oakley district. How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
