Uptown Lovers
a synopsis
by Austin Mitchell
Morgana Simmonds wrings a promise
out of her boyfriend, Stewart Brown, that he will be faithful to her. They are
at her sending off party. With that promise, firmly in her head, she leaves for
three years of studies in the United States. Within a year she is back home to
attend her father’s funeral. She breaks off with him when she hears about his
cheating with her arch enemy, April English. She and April have had many fights
over Stewart. She finds a new boyfriend in the States but they break up after
nearly a year. Stewart hears about their break-up and calls her to put out some
feelers. They agree to rekindle the relationship. They have been lovers for
more than five years before she went away.
Stewart wastes no time, and on
Morgana’s return, throws a big party for her and they agree to be engaged. But
Stewart has miscalculated as his lover, April English, flees to the United States, vowing never to talk to him
again. His other women, Bobbette Greene, vows never to sleep with him again if
he marries Morgana.
They eventually become engaged
despite Morgana having her suspicions that Stewart is sleeping with other women
including Bobbette Greene.
Morgana in the meantime gets a job at a management
consulting firm. One of the vice presidents, Brad Newman, falls for her. On Ash
Wednesday she goes for a drink with him much to Stewart’s disapproval. Brad
tries to befriend her but she turns him down.
Despite Morgana going for that
drink with Brad, Stewart is confident that she will remain faithful to him.
Nevertheless, he feels that she is behaving like a teenager by not wanting to
spend nights with him. He blames her for him straying from their relationship.
She had promised him that to keep him away from other women, she would have
been back home during most holidays, but that never materialized.
During the Easter holiday weekend they go to Ocho Rios
and Morgana goes to sleep with him every night. She and Bobbette Greene quarrel
after Morgana accused her of being one of Stewart’s women. When they return
from Ocho Rios, Morgana warns him that there would be no more passionate
weekends between them until he puts on the other ring. Stewart agrees but still
refuses to set a date.
Then all of a
sudden Stewart glums up and Morgana begins to wonder what is really going on.
She has to rebuff her colleague, Brad Newman, a second time. Eventually Morgana
gets to find out the reason for Stewart’s uneasiness. Bobbette is getting
married! She asks him for a meeting which ends with them swearing never to talk
to each other again.
As a result of
their falling out, Morgana has stopped wearing the engagement ring. Nevertheless,
Stewart is still trying to win back her love. But he needn’t worry because his
old girlfriend, April English, is back in town and all too willing to take
Morgana’s place in his bed.
Morgana has heard that April is back in town but still
decides to continue punishing Stewart. They attend the wedding of one of her
relatives and agree to meet for a reconciliation.
The reconciliation goes
well but Morgana refuses to go to bed with him. Stewart has to go April and
other women. Stewart and April are now full time lovers. He and Morgana still
meet but they can’t seem to agree on anything. He wants her to start wearing
the ring again and to begin sharing his bed.
Morgana tells her sister that she is
waiting for a chance to catch him with a woman as all she has been going on are
suspicions about him and other women. Stewart is also devising a plan to get
Morgana to talk to him again. The plan involves her mother and aunt. He feels
that once they are on his side then it will be easy to coax Morgana to start
loving him again. But will this work and will Morgana’s plan work. Do they have
a plan, B. Only time will tell.
