We Can Do Better At Sports

When cricket was in  it's heyday in the  we couldn't see an open piece of land and some sort of cricket game being played on it. We played cricket in gullies, on hillsides. We fashioned all sorts of bats used all sorts of balls to play the game. We all saw what that resulted in our being World Champions in the late 1970s and 80s. Many of those place where we used to play cricket are now reserved for football. We see the amount of  football being played and Jamaica qualified for the football World Cup in 1998. Trinidad also qualified a few years later. A former colleague of  mine told me that when Jamaica qualified for France in 1998, he went to France compliments of airline tickets from long lost relatives in England. This man was an ardent cricket fan. He told me that cricket wasn't saying anything again. Fortunately cricket in the West Indie is on the rise again in the shortest form of the game. We have just won the T-20 Wold Cup in both the women and men's version of the game. At the moment Jamaica's chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia is hanging by a slim thread. Many people have said that we are failing at football because of the state of our playing surfaces.

BUBBLE'S BABY-An Excerpt

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. Jamaica Creative Writer's Conference

How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
