Country Fairs

Have you ever been to a country fair? We used to have so many of them. We used to have them on Boxing Day, Easter Monday and on Independence Day. Normally we would have the fair in the day and then a dance in the night. Some of the places where fairs were held were Grateful Hill Primary School, Cassava River Primary School, St. Faiths Primary School. We also had fairs in Above Rocks and at Glengoffe High School. Apart from the fair during the day, we had a cricket match. The fairs would have ferris wheel rides and many other things such as catching a greased pig. Food and drinks would be available for sale right throughout the day into the night. People would come from all over to attend these fairs.

BUBBLE'S BABY-An Excerpt

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. Jamaica Creative Writer's Conference

How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
