Jamaica's Movie Industry

From as far back as I can remember a movie industry has been touted for Jamaica. Yet up till now one hasn't got off the ground. I have heard about the appointment of several film commissioners and yet still nothing seems to be happening. We have produced a few films but that is all. But why do we need a movie industry? The simple answer is to showcase our culture to the world. I don't even think tourism does that as the tourist are only coming to certain sections of the island. What about sports? I don't think this is enough. Our music goes a far way but we could integrate the music and this might be another outlet for the music. Nigeria and India are two countries that have huge film industries. They produce hundreds of films each year. The government should seek cooperation from these two countries and others in helping to develop this industry.

BUBBLE'S BABY-An Excerpt

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. Jamaica Creative Writer's Conference

How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
