Hanging

There has been quite a furor ever since the current Minister of National Security revisited the subject of hanging. I think he asked his Junior Minister to look at what legislation there was preventing the resumption of hanging in Jamaica. Some persons are saying that it was a knee-jerk reaction to the recent spike in murders. But the question is, will hanging ever resume in Jamaica? Several years ago Trinidad hanged some men who were on death row. My understanding is that there is only one person on death row in Jamaica. The impediments to hanging anyone in Jamaica even if we manage to convict them is that our international partners would frown on it. It has always been said that one of the reasons for the high murder rate in Jamaica is because the murders believe that they will not be caught. So I think before we can start to talk about hanging we have to catch the criminals. Please visit the Austin G Mitchell page at Amazon for a look at my books.
