The New Tax Package

As was being speculated the new tax ceiling for PAYE employees has been raised to J$ 1,000,271.00 as from July 1, 2016. It will be applicable to all employees It is expected that it will be further increased on April 1, 2017 to M$1.5. The Minister emphasized that it will only apply to persons who pay PAYE. Propagandist had been saying that everybody, even the unemployed would be eligible to receive the tax break. Persons were saying that the tax when originally announced would cause disequilibrium  at the workplace. Because of the tax break it was possible that employees could take home more that their supervisor and this might be a disincentive to getting promoted. As it is now it is an across the board measure that will affect all employees.

BUBBLE'S BABY-An Excerpt

Bubbles’ Baby by Austin Mitchell As I drove into Creighton on my way to Latore’s Ridge a young lady waved me down. When I stopped the car and she came up to it, I recognized her as ‘Bubbles’ Kenton, one of my former students. “Teacher, can I beg you a ride to Rennals?” “Sure, Bubbles, get in.” I opened the car door for her and she got in. She had a young baby with her, but I noticed that she didn’t have a bag, although the baby was wrapped in a towel. “Your first baby, Bubbles?” I asked as I drove off the car. “He’s Leta’s baby, teacher. Jamaica Creative Writer's Conference

How about a creative writers conference? This would bring together some of Jamaica's best creative writers to share ideas. I'm putting it out there because as far as I know there is not a lot going for creative writers. Can anybody make a living out of creative writing in Jamaica?
